Book Review: A Star Curiously Singing by Kerry Nietz

Product Description: If he fixes the robot, will he break his world? In a future ruled by sharia law machines are managed by debuggers, who in turn are owned by masters. Sandfly is a level 12 debugger. He is sent into Earth orbit to repair a robot-a robot that went on an experimental flight into deep space... And tore itself apart. As Sandfly digs into the mystery aboard the space station, he discovers what the bot heard around that distant star. He discovers that the bot heard...singing. As Sandfly pieces together the clues, the masters spread the trap before his feet. Everyone is racing to the same conclusion, but only one side welcomes what the singing represents.

Amazon: A Star Curiously Singing

Review: Let me start by saying that Kerry Nietz is my kind of author! He's created a futuristic world that is so dark and detailed that it reminds me a lot of Blade Runner. The political and religious overtones to this story cannot be missed. Sandfly is a debugger or a better description would be slave. He has been implanted with a computer chip in his brain that is in constant connection with what is called The Stream; like the internet but so much more. The chip also is programmed to register any debugger's negative thought patterns which prevents them from rebelling or doing harm against their masters. The language and scenery are very intriguing but when Mr. Nietz turns this story into a mystery on a docked space ship the real fun begins. I won't go into more details because the story is much more fun to discover on your own.

I found myself compelled to keep the pages turning as I was transported into the mind of a debugger. How that happened given I'm a freehead is puzzling but I digress. A Star Curiously Singing is one of the most original stories I've read. I recommend this book for young adults and adults with a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. Kerry Nietz is in the same science fiction league as Michael Crichton! I look forward to reading the rest of this fantastic series!

  4. This sounds like the sort of book I'd love to read. Really enjoyed Blade Runner when I read it a number of years ago. I tend to find that Sci-Fi writers can be a little lazy, but this novel has intrigued me.

It also has a decent title, which is again (I personally find) not too common with the more modern Sci-Fi books being released.

The parallel with Crichton is intriguing. I remember reading his 'Timeline' and facepalming, despite how engrossing it was, because there was also a lot of lazy writing in that book.

Regardless, I look forward to nabbing a copy of this for myself at some point. :)

  6. The first thing I look for in a book is originality and this looks like it fits the bill. I like the idea of singing being introduced into the plot as a significant entity... Intriguing.

Thanks to this author and to Daniel for bringing this to us. Great interview.

  12. This book sounds intriguing. I'm working on a script that involves debuggers, so I've learned a bit about them. (I'm not normally much of a programmer!) I love the title as well.

  13. I've heard about this several times, but hadn't looked very far into it. Now that I've read your review, I'll have to see if I can get my hands on it. One way or another. ;) Unique stories are very welcome.

Giveaways are clever ways to get the stalk- er, quiet readers of your blog to comment. :) Keep the posts coming.

Are you a book reviewer? Do you like young adult Fantasy/Paranormal stories with a bit of Sci-fi? If you are interested and have a Kindle or e-reader please read on...

An explosion shatters the night sky….

Smoke and flames erupt over the city of Chicago. FBI Agent Nick Catlin watches helplessly as their only lead straps on a glider and leaps off a high rooftop, soaring toward Lake Michigan. They’ve lost him, again. The crime scenes always fit the same pattern—five babies are among the casualties. Fourteen months later, though, in New York, no infant bodies are found. Nick’s gut tells him the killer was somehow interrupted in his work and that he won’t stop until he tracks down those children and finishes what he started.

Oklahoma rancher Leigh Barrus is barely making ends meet when his estranged niece, Janet, shows up at his ranch with five babies in tow. The terrifying tale she tells him about genetic experiments is only the beginning of the shocking truths….

A gripping fantasy/paranormal thriller

with a twist of sci-fi for all ages
